Townsville Sailing Club

Townsville Sailing Club’s She Sails Team / Discover Sailing Team have been proactive in promoting and supporting women and girls in sailing in several ways during the period from August 2020 to 2021.These include:

Events:
Five successfully run She Sails events in Pacer Sailing Dinghy’s (with an additional event planned next month). These events had 63 registered participants, most new to sailing with approximately 25% of participants continuing to complete a full Level 1 sailing course, some advancing to boat ownership and regular club racing. Sails events are Facilitated by 7 female club members (4 are qualified Instructors, 2 committee members), plus female club volunteers.

Mentoring Instructors:
Female leaders – the senior instructing team and committee have supported our youth female instructors to take
the lead role in Tackers and Adult learn to sail programs. Bailey Wilson and Kayla Boothby recently completing both
Tackers and Adult learn to Sail courses, planning and facilitating the entire programs.

Supporting coaches:
Chelseann Osborne has been supported and encourage in her coaching role, coaching some of the Sabot club
sailors, assisting them with their national’s preparation and keeping their enthusiasm in the sport.

Female Leadership:
Senior Instructor Diane Kelsey remains active in the Shesails leadership team, joining online meetings, attending the
recent Clubs conference and She Sails networking meeting. Planning Shesails events, sharing ideas and mentoring.
Diane was also successful in obtain Government funding through the COVID recovery period, directing funding to
she sails events increasing accessibility to the sport. Female leaders on the Sailing club committee, Leandra Boothby and Felicity Smith, provide visual pathways for other females considering leadership roles and support the She sails events.

Culture building:
Club members Sue Smith, Fiona Curry, Joanne Anderson, Natasha Stanta and Breda McCathy have actively
supported TSC’s She sails events over the past year, while role modelling female participation in the club as safety
boat team, race officials, boat owners or competitive skippers. With many other female members of all ages
supporting one another and assisting with promoting the club and the sport to ensure a more inclusive culture at
Townsville Sailing Club.

Townsville Sailing Club's Committee and Members are committed to the continual promotion and support of female
participation in dinghy sailing.
