SheSails Awards National Finalists 2024

Sophie Baynton from Keppel Bay Sailing Club, Queensland  

 

  

Sophie, as the club's SheSails Representative, plays a key role in advocating for & celebrating female involvement in sailing. She introduced the SheSails Learn to Sail program, which achieved immediate success with high participation numbers. 

Building on this triumph, Sophie initiated Women & Girls Regattas featuring renowned female guest speakers and attractive incentives, such as fantastic merchandise.

Each year, the regatta has exceeded expectations. Sophie's exceptional administrative, organizational, and communication skills have attracted significant sponsors and grants to support the Regattas and Programs.

 

Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Victoria  

 

 

The Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) has been a trailblazer in promoting female participation in sailing for over 32 years.

With its inclusivity, extensive volunteer support, and dedication to fostering new talent, AWKR has inspired countless women and girls to embrace the sport.

This year’s event saw 32 teams and nearly 200 competitors, further cementing its legacy as a cornerstone of women’s sailing in Australia.

 

   

 

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Women's Sailing Course, New South Wales  

 

 

The NCYC Women’s Sailing Course has been a pioneering program that has significantly increased female participation in the sport and built a strong sailing culture at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club. 

The course has made a substantial impact by offering multiple sailing opportunities each week, delivered by experienced and inspiring female instructors.

In addition to these courses, the club continues to promote female participation across all club activities and hosts key events such as the She Sails Development and She Sails Open Regattas each year.

 

   

 

SheSails Awards State Finalists 2024

Girls Who Sail program Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Western Australia  

 

 

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and expansion of female participation in sailing through their exemplary "Girls Who Sail" camp, held on the 16th and 17th of March 2024.

This marquee event brought together 36 female sailors aged 9-19 from across Western Australia, including participants from remote areas such as Denmark, to experience a diverse range of sailing activities.

The camp offered opportunities in dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, foiling, and mentoring, fostering a strong sense of community among young female sailors.

   

 

South Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta Committee 2023  

 

 

What a great weekend of racing, showcasing such an amazing culture and so many women on the water enjoying their racing.

SAWKR is aimed at women currently participating in sailing, and looking to enjoy the company, competition and camaraderie of other female sailors.

This event could not have been possible without the brilliant efforts of the Committee, and they did a fantastic job at making sure the weekend was a success.

   

 

DSS 42 Degrees South Women's Regatta, Derwent Sailing Squadron, Tasmania  

 

 

The 2024 Frontline Mind – DSS 42 degrees South Women’s Regatta promised to be an exceptional event and definitely was with 105 women competing across 12 keelboats with 2 short races and a passage race to finish the day.

The regatta demonstrated the commitment of the Squadron to promoting and supporting female participation in keelboat sailing and helping to create the largest women’s regatta ever held in Tasmania.

DSS Sailing Manager, Colleen Darcey, was impressed with the enthusiastic level of engagement from the competitors and is already planning for the next event.
