125 Association salute for International Women's Day 2020

Published Wed 11 Mar 2020

Women play a huge part in the 125 Association both on and off the water. For International Women’s Day 2020,  they wish to salute all the Women of 125ing for their huge contributions to the class they have today.

Some outstanding Life Members and contributors to the class are;
Elaine Hollands was the Secretary from 1985 - 1995.
Shirley Rooke was the Secretary from 1995 – 2005
Sandy Merrutia was the Secretary from 2005 – 2010 and President from 2008-2010.

Their current committee has Margaret Shiner (Life Member) as Secretary, Emily Jones as Vice President, Chloe Back and Annika Pennifold in Publicity & Louise Back as EFYC delegate.

Their women sailors have always been fierce competitors on the water too.
Amanda Hall was the first female skipper to win a State Championships in 1987 sailing with her Father Kevin who is a life member and class founder in WA. Denise Wilcock was a 10 time State Champion and 2 time National Champion sailing with husband Mark. That is quite an achievement.

Claire Smallwood and Hayley Gilling so far are the only female duo to win a State Titles at Nedlands in 2009….its about time another was added to that list!
Zoe Thompson won a State Championships in Esperance, 2013. She went on to win the World Junior Laser Radial Championships and help Australia qualify a spot for the 2020 Olympics

Ella Coxall is the current National Champion after she and Ryan Sherburn won the 2019/2020 Port Lincoln Titles. Kate Jones is the current State Champion after she and Ferry Lanter won the Albany Championship in 2019.

Thank you to all the female 125ers, past and present for their contributions and involvement. Long may it continue and grow!
