Tell us how you first got involved with Sailing.
I'm an adventurer at heart. My grandfather and great grandfather were both sailors in traditional timber sailing boats that sailed around the world. My family has sailing in their DNA - and its in mine!
There are many pathways in sailing, where has your journey taken you?
Sailing has multiple pathways, it doesn't matter where you start, you just have to start! That's where the adventure begins. First you have to learn row a little boat! and that's where I started! The sailing journey has taken me to learn more about myself. You open yourself up to communicating with people of all ages and experiences.
Whatever part of sailing you belong to, tell us about what you enjoy about your sport?
Learn about yourself, broadens your life experiences, helps you steer a pathway through life, builds self confidence and gives you challenges that push you further than you dreamed you would ever go.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting into sailing?
You can start anywhere! Wherever you start you will need support and encouragement. You will build friendships and belong to the larger family of sailing. You'll become part of a growing family, a spirit, soul a strength. Come and join us and we'll go with you. I never turned any one away from learning - its an inclusion sport.
Tell us your favourite story ….
I competed in the 1988 World Tasar Titles, this was my first big regatta here at Keppel Bay Sailing Club, my club. My crew and I were 40 kg under the minimum weight! Frank Bethwaite let us place my 7 year old daughter as a movable weight in the boat, because Frank thought it would be unsafe to place 40kg of lead on the bottom! We came in at 101st out of 120 boats. We had big smiles on our faces - we could do it - so can you!
