Tell us how you first got involved with Sailing.
I grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. Every summer, my parents would send me to different sports summer schools to be physically active on weekdays and we spent most Sundays at a sports club's pool where we would occasionally see dinghy sailors. That year, they let me choose the sport and I picked sailing. So little we all knew that sailing would become the sport which I would get addicted to for the rest of my life!
There are many pathways in sailing, where has your journey taken you?
It all started with a small dinghy when I was 9, followed by competition sailing and winning many medals at the national level in my teenage years. A couple of years ago, after moving to Australia, I started sailing dinghies again as a hobby. After obtaining skipper certificates and going for a beautiful sailing trip in Greece, I and my husband decided to purchase our own sailing yacht. We now own a 31-foot sailboat named La Luna and we try to spend as many weekends as possible sailing in Sydney. My husband has been the biggest supporter of my dreams of living on a boat, while documenting our journey on our YouTube channel Sailing La Luna along the way. In the future, we might eventually make a decision to sail around the world!
Whatever part of sailing you belong to, tell us about what you enjoy about your sport?
Three things: 1 - On a dinghy, feeling the movement with the wind and becoming a part of the boat as a whole. 2 - Every moment being unique because everything in this sport is dictated by nature. 3 - On a yacht, the ability to explore unchartered places.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting into sailing?
It is the greatest sport of all, since you have to use both your body and your mind while being connected to the nature on a whole different level!
