Published Tue 15 Dec 2020
How long have you been in the sport of Sailing?
3 months
What Club, Association or company are you involved with?
Tweed Valley Sailing Club
What Part do you play in our sport?
sailor
Tell us how you first got involved with Sailing.
I grew up in a family of sailors but I wasn’t really interested in sailing myself when I was young. It wasn’t until I became an adult and moved away from home that I realised I wanted to learn to sail and spend as much time on the water as possible. I went to the local sailing club and met Monique who facilitated my first She Sails course.
There are many pathways in Sailing where has your journey taken you?
After completing my first She Sails course, I became a member of the sailing club and started crewing in the club races and travelling to regattas in NSW and QLD. Now i am crewing in dinghy races regularly and learning to crew on a keelboat.
Whatever part of sailing you belong to, tell us about what you enjoy about your sport?
I enjoy sailing in a group of people and learning to work together. I love being on the water and learning about the movements of water and wind. I enjoy being apart of the community at the sailing club and racing together.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting into sailing?
Do what excites you. Have a go, even if it scares you. Be open to learning new things from everyone you meet.
Tell us your favourite story ….
I have many stories of capsizing already, but probably the best one was when we had just won 3 races in our class at a regatta and while sailing back to shore, one of our crew accidentally fell overboard and the boat capsized. Our mast became stuck in the mud and we had to be towed out by the safety boat. Everyone was happy in the end, great end to the regatta!
