6 years

What Club, Association or company are you involved with?
South Brisbane Sailing Club

What Part do you play in our sport?
Sailor, Instructor, Coach, Club Volunteer, Committee Member

Tell us how you first got involved with Sailing.
My dad taught me how to crew for him when I was 12

There are many pathways in sailing, where has your journey taken you?
I’ve been the Heron national champion female skipper at the age of 15 and the Heron national champion junior skipper at 16. Along with this I’ve met some of my greatest friends who live all over Australia.

Whatever part of sailing you belong to, tell us about what you enjoy about your sport?
I love the joy of sailing with my family and friends. No matter the outcome of the race, we always find joy in being together. My cousin and I are known for our particularly loud (and not very good) singing while racing.

What would you say to someone thinking about getting into sailing?
It’s a sport that everyone can get into. If you aren’t competitive, you can meet new friends. If you are a family, you can all sail together and compete no matter the age or gender. If you are disabled, there are special boats made to help especially for you, and there are plenty of supporting roles that are just as important.

Tell us your favourite story ….
One time in Perth at the 60th heron nationals, my cousin and I (both 16 at the time) were racing, and doing really well! We were singing and screaming as we raced down the course when suddenly about half way down the first beat, a pod of dolphins came up and swam beside us as we sailed to the mark. It was so amazing to be surrounded by about 5 dolphins, as if they were cheering us on to the front of the fleet. We rounded the mark first and were so proud and mystified all at the same time.
