What Part do you play in our sport?
Parent
Tell us how you first got involved with Sailing.
My husband and I walked past a local sailing club and signed Addison (Addy) up for a trial lesson. She absolutely loved it and we have progressed from a sign up trial lesson to being beach crew, financial sponsors and transport crew for our 11 year old, living and breathing sailing and we enjoy every minute of it.
There are many pathways in sailing, where has your journey taken you?
Addy did her first regatta at Qld Youth week at RQYS in July 2019 and since then we have attended regattas at Lake Catharaba, Humpybong and Lake Macquarie. We love travelling to the regattas, it's great family time and we have met some wonderful people along the way. I chose the photo of me standing on the foreshore watching the boats, trying to see who is who on the water because that is a perfect demonstration of a parents regatta experience!
Whatever part of sailing you belong to, tell us about what you enjoy about your sport?
I love the independence and freedom that sailing offers Addy and it's not a bad way to spend your time ... relaxing by the water and watching your child have fun outdoors and on the water
What would you say to someone thinking about getting into sailing?
It is a fantastic sport that creates a sense of purpose, achievement, mastery; it encourages both independence and team work; and most importantly, it puts a smile on the faces of sailors
Tell us your favourite story ….
Addy had asked us for months could she buy an old "yacht" and do it up herself. Recently, her coach found her an old paper tiger and we bought it for her. Over a few weeks she sanded it all back, did some repairs (with some help from dad), repainted it and has since sailed it a couple of times with her dad. She designed the signage for the name and has named it "Dubble Trubble" (to reflect it being a boat for her and dad). My husband doesn't sail but Addy is doing a great job in teaching him. I love that sailing offers so many pathways and learning discoveries for children, such as projects of doing up old boats.
