Emirates Team New Zealand – Kelly Hartzell & Tanya Peart
Australian Sailing is thrilled to be partnering with Yachting New Zealand again and we are delighted to announce that guest speakers Kelly Hartzell and Tanya Peart (leading engineers from Emirates Team New Zealand - America's Cup) are confirmed in the lineup.
Kelly Hartzell (Left) & Tanya Peart (Right)
Kelly graduated from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL, USA) with a B.S. of Mechanical Engineering in 2014 before starting her career in the Transmission and Driveline department at Ford Motor Company, focusing on testing and development in the AWD calibration group. She moved to New Zealand in 2019 where she joined Emirates Team New Zealand as a Mechatronics Engineer, and currently specializes in sensors and data acquisition onboard.
Tanya chose to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland as she ‘realised that a lot of the design of a yacht such as, the aerodynamics of the sails, the hydrodynamics of the hull, and the composite structural design, are part of engineering’ and she wanted to learn more about these areas.
In her final year she undertook a project where she used computational tools and modelled some spinnaker sails in the wind tunnel. This led to her PhD project with Doyle Sails where she was able to learn more about sail and yacht design and further develop her coding and modelling skills.
Following this, Tanya joined Emirates Team New Zealand as a Fluid Dynamics Engineer in 2021, working on modelling the aerodynamics of the America’s Cup yachts for use in design analysis and the sailing simulator. Tanya said, ‘these models allow the sailors to use the simulator to practice sailing the yacht with different sail trims, and the designers to assess the performance of different configurations.’
Both Kelly & Tanya have a significant amount of skill and knowledge in sailing and we very much look forward to hearing about their journeys at the conference.
